APPROACH AND PHILOSOPHY

MULTI - DISCIPLINARY
Planning issues are ‘wicked problems’ that are often contradictory and complex. This calls in the need for a holistic approach and brings into discussion the multidisciplinary nature of planning. I have found it helpful to assign different roles (community liaison, city planner, private firm developer, EPA person, etc.) to the students in dealing with an issue or a proposed solution where they learn that planning is more about collaboration and negotiation than finding a universal solution.

CONTEXT ORIENTED PLANNING
Having spent my early years in diverse towns and cities of India, my first experience in the United States as a planner was to realize the importance of context including socio-economic and socio-cultural factors.

SPATIAL ANALYSIS
My knowledge with 2D and 3D model creation will help the students to critically analyze sites spatially and visualize their ideas more tangibly. I have felt a dire need for planning students to conceive a sense of the space (both quantitatively and qualitatively) they are working, and I intend to incorporate that into my teaching curriculum.

PLANNING FOR DIVERSITY
It is imperative in today’s world of differences based on race, religion, gender, age, and nationality, we as human beings embrace the idea of diversity, equity, and justice. As we try to understand and celebrate diversity, it is also important to remember the past and glorify or address the historical events, not as they had been perceived earlier, but in the light of today’s growing impetus for social justice.
To break up long lecture classes I intend to introduce in-class activities, audio-video clips, or other engaging experiences that can keep the students receptive. When discussing theories, I try to incorporate materials from everyday lives like personal experiences, movies, songs, social media, or even memes.

SOFTWARE PROFICIENCY
In the digital world of today, I believe improving software skills is as essential as developing design thinking. One of my aims as a teacher would be to teach students to use GIS for spatial analyses, make the concept plan in Illustrator, delineate the plan in AutoCAD, take the design into SketchUp for 3D modeling, render in Photoshop or Illustrator, and finally compose in InDesign.
Beginning Fall 2020, Covid situations forced us to offer online courses. I have taught four online studio courses since then that have helped me become adept with web-based methods like class Zoom/Webex class meetings, Microsoft Teams, video tutorials, and interactive Murals (an online whiteboard where students can post images, comments, and drawings simultaneously). In Spring 2021, I worked as a teaching assistant in the Masters’ Capstone Project, where my role was to help my instructor with the online platform and guide the students on the urban design aspects of the proposal.

COURSE EVALUATIONS
“Was very knowledgeable and passionate which showed and helped keep students engaged”
“The university would be remiss if they did not make every effort to hire Arindam Roy. His knowledge of the field is incredible as is his patience and teaching ability. Any question our class had for any class, the answer was always, ask Arindam.”
“This course felt up-to-date with today’s world which has been rare in my classes at DAAP thus far. I enjoyed learning about how creative planners can be when designing a space”
